When we think of robots, our minds tend to wander to the robots we saw on television or at the movies. These robots fought crime, told jokes, and were indestructible. Today we have robots for many different reasons. Robots can be toys or household appliances, and can make our daily lives a lot easier.
What is a Robot?
A robot is something that can often make decisions on its own. A robot can be remote controlled, but must be able to make its own decisions without the input of an operator. A robot must have a form of a brain to process information and make a decision based upon the information given. A robot may act under the direct control of a human or under the control of a pre-programmed computer. Robots can perform tasks that are considered too difficult or too dangerous for humans, or they may be used to automate a repetitive task that rarely changes. This is evident in the car manufacturing industry. Robots are used to perform tasks that rarely change but that have to be done the same way each and every time, such as painting, welding, or assembly. Robots can also be used to deal with dangerous tasks such as cleaning toxic waste, bomb disposal, space exploration, and underwater work or even mining.
Robots have also been used in the medical field for things such as minimally invasive procedures. Obviously, robots have been used in literature, where they do anything from saving humans to being spouses. These are, of course, fictional robots, and are normally not based on any type of scientific or robotic automation that is currently in use.
Can I Build a Robot?
A robot can be built, but it isn't easy. The first thing to decide is whether or not you want to build your robot from scratch, or if you want to start with a kit. If you are building a robot from scratch, it may mean months before the robot is up and running. All types of robot parts need to be purchased before you can even get started. Building a robot from scratch requires the following: designing and building a base, and locating and purchasing drive and steering motors. A builder of robots in this way should also have access to a drill press, band saw, a sander, and maybe even a milling machine. As you can see, this process can be very time consuming and may even cost a lot of money. A drill press, sander, and band saw can cost hundreds of dollars, and may not be a good investment if the builder of the robot doesn't finish the project or doesn't plan on doing more in the future. Most robots built from scratch can cost up to $400, and some people have spent 1000's of dollars and many, many months, or even years, getting a robot to work.
A good idea for building a robot is to start from a robot kit. These kits normally have all the basic parts included and tips on where to find the rest of the parts. The robot kit can also contain a list of things that can be substituted if the recommended part isn't easily available. Starting with a kit is probably the most inexpensive way to build a robot.
What Are Some of the Current Helpful Robots?
A robot called the Roomba Vacuuming Robot has been called the best selling robot of its type. The Roomba is a domestic type of robot. This robot vacuums without the guidance of a human and is easy to use and affordable. The robot vacuum comes in different price ranges from $150 to $330, and is sold in most common stores such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy. This robot has been proven to alleviate the mundane task of vacuuming. They are affordable and useful in our everyday lives. Other types of domestic robots provide companionship, such as a pet robot dog. There are also countless other robots kits that are designed to be toys for children of all ages. These robots are not specifically designed to be robots that will assist with housework, but robot toys, robot dogs, and even robot boys and girls. Robot automation has allowed these types of robots as well as others to be sold in kits.
What Are Industrial Robots?
There are also other large-scale robots, such as industrial robots, that are used in manufacturing and other types of warehousing and logistics companies. These robots can do something as simple as picking products from shelves, but there is no end to their use. Industrial robots can be programmed to perform the same task over and over again, almost without fail. The first industrial robot was a robot used to transfer products from one location to another, usually within 12 feet or so apart. As the years went by, this robot was improved upon time and time again. Robot Automation took over, and now robots can be programmed to do almost anything.
