Robots

When we think of robots, our minds tend to wander to the robots we saw on television or at the movies. |

Popular Robots
We’ve all read the stories, the ones written in the 1940s about the boxy metallic humanoid robots who should have been doing all of our work twenty years ago and, mysteriously, have yet to appear on the scene. Where are these metal wonders? Why aren’t our factories filled with them?

Spotlight: Asimo by Honda
“ASIMO” stands for “Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility”, reflecting the innovative and original nature of the Asimo robot, and the fact that it represents a big step – or, if you prefer, a giant leap – in robot technology. Many people have suggested that the name is also a nod to science fiction legend Isaac Asimov, who coined the term “robotics” in a series of landmark stories and novels about robots which also introduced the world to the concept of Asimov’s “Three Laws of Robotics” – rules guiding robot behavior, hardwired into their construction, that prevented them from doing harm to humans under any circumstances. Spotlight: Pleo
The Pleo Dinosaur is an astonishing new product, produced by Ugobe. The robot dinosaur is expected to be available in the summer of 2007, and like the co-creator Caleb Chung’s prior success, the Furby, is expected to revolutionize the toy market. While Pleo does not come with a small price tag at a $300 retail cost, it will likely be a popular choice this holiday season. Advanced robotic technology enables Pleo to learn, change, and adapt its behaviors, making it more of a pet than a toy.
